Skating Program
The Greenwich Skating Club, located contiguous to the GCDS campus, makes skating time available for the school, allowing Country Day to offer a unique program that gives all students experience on the rink.
Grades 1 - 3
Beginning in first grade, students and their P.E. teachers skate once a week throughout the winter.
Both novices and advanced skaters can participate in focused skating lessons with our P.E. teachers and Chris Birkland, who has been a skating instructor at the Greenwich Skating Club for over fifteen years.
Grades 4 - 5
Skating is one of the three-week sports units offered for all fourth and fifth grade students during the winter.
With only 18 students practicing on the rink at one time, our students have plenty of space to improve their speed and control through drills, games, and instruction.
In small groups based on level of experience (beginning skating, intermediate skating, ice hockey), the students work with several instructors, strengthening their core skating skills and, in many cases, preparing to play competitive ice hockey starting in grade 6.
The skating instruction is led by Sergey Khomchenko, who has taught ice hockey, power skating, power hockey, and beginning skating in Greenwich since 1995.
Interscholastic Hockey Grades 6 - 9
Both boys and girls in grades 6 - 9 can choose ice hockey as their winter sport. For the roster of interscholastic teams, see Winter Team Schedules & Scores.
