NURSERY & PRE-KINDERGARTEN ADMISSIONS PROCEDURES 2011-2012 | Overview We appreciate your interest in the preschool programs at The Greenwich Country Day School. Both Nursery and Pre-Kindergarten are considered “entry” grades. This means that we open approximately 45 spaces in Nursery each year and another 20 spaces in Pre-Kindergarten.
Our admissions process provides you with as much information as possible to help determine if GCDS is the right match for your son or daughter. For that reason, we require a parent visit to the school on a morning when school is in session. The required steps are listed below. We welcome questions or comments. Age Eligibility Unlike some academic programs which group students in a grade level based on birthdates occurring during the January to December calendar year, GCDS uses mid-year cutoffs for student placement in a grade level. Eligible applicants to Nursery or Pre-Kindergarten in the fall of 2011 have birthdates within the date ranges listed below: Nursery: June, 2007 through June, 2008 Pre-Kindergarten: June, 2006 through June, 2007
Application Form (MUST BE RECEIVED ON OR BEFORE DECEMBER 15, 2010.) In order to be better informed when you tour our campus, we request that you complete this step prior to your campus visit. Please type or print the information on the form. Mail the completed application with: • A copy of your child’s most recent school report, if he/she is in a preschool program. • The Parent’s Confidential Report • A non-refundable $75 application fee. (No fee is required if applying for financial assistance.)
Campus Visit • For Parents: Contact the Admissions Office at (203) 863-5610 to arrange a parent visit to the school. Tours and interviews are conducted Monday through Thursday mornings from mid- September through January. A current GCDS parent will take you on a 45-minute tour of the school, followed by a meeting with an Admissions Director. Please allow approximately an hour and one half for your visit. This visit is for parents only. • For Prospective Students: We begin scheduling student visits for the preschool in mid-November. Please allow 30-45 minutes for your child’s visit.
School Recommendation Form If your child is currently enrolled in a preschool program, please have your child’s current classroom teacher complete the Teacher Recommendation Form in the Admissions Packet or available on www.GCDS.net. If your child is not in a formal preschool program, please disregard this step.
Deadlines and Letters of Notification For consideration in the initial group of applications reviewed by the Admissions Committee, the application form must be received no later than December 15, 2010. All other pieces of the applicant’s file must be completed by January 15. 2011. Letters of notification are mailed in coordination with the other Greenwich independent schools in late February. Applications submitted after the December date will be considered on a rolling basis, subject to available places.

On the day of the visit, applicants will be asked to work with one of our learning specialists as well as spend time visiting with students in a classroom with their current grade level.

Please send the Transcript and School Record Release Form to your child’s current school for the release of all school records, including all standardized test scores (when applicable). • Please note that all records must be sent directly to the Admissions Office by your child’s current school. • Records received without available standardized test scores are not considered complete.
School Recommendation Form • We request that your child’s current teacher complete the Teacher Recommendation Form in the Admissions Packet or available on www.GCDS.net. If the applicant’s school policy precludes a school official completing a recommendation, then an instructor who has worked with your child in an educational setting may complete a recommendation. This list includes religion teachers, music teachers, past classroom teachers, or sport coaches. • Kindergarten: One recommendation form is required. • First through Second Grades: Two recommendation forms are required. One should be a school head or current classroom teacher. The other recommendation may be a teacher or instructor who has worked with your child in an educational setting.
Academic Testing Students entering Kindergarten through Second Grade will complete academic screening during their campus visit.

Area independent schools offer this testing on several Saturday mornings during the admissions season beginning in November. Dates and details of the testing are included in your admissions package. All testing must be completed by January for consideration in the initial group of applicants reviewed by the Admissions Committee.
